Monroe County, in conjunction with Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and City of Key West, is in the 60 percent design phase of a .8-mile comprehensive roadway, sidewalk, and drainage improvement project in Key West. The project will take place on Bertha Street from South Roosevelt Boulevard to Flagler Avenue and First Street from Flagler Avenue to North Roosevelt Boulevard in Key West.
Monroe County is responsible for several streets in Key West, including First Street and Bertha Street. The County maintains the roadbed and drainage and the City of Key West is responsible for the sidewalks, traffic control devices, and utilities operated by the City.
A stormwater management system will be added that takes into consideration sea level rise, king tides, periodic flooding, and other weather-related factors.
The County is coordinating with FDOT’s maintenance department to install backflow prevention devices on a FDOT-owned outflow on North Roosevelt and the County will be installing backflow preventers on the County-owned area at Garrison Bight on First Street.
“Monroe County is also partnering with the City of Key West to tie into its Dennis Street pump station, alleviating the need to install a separate pump station on Bertha Street,” said Monroe County Project Manager Deb London. “The County has also coordinated with Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority to replace or adjust water valves, water meter boxes, and manhole covers in this Monroe County-managed project.”
The engineering company has reviewed existing conditions and environmental conditions on the roads and is working to avoid any major impacts to existing homes and businesses along the route. The project will add ADA-compliant sidewalks, on-street parking, and bicycle lanes. New pavement markings and sign replacement will also be completed.
The project is funded by an FDOT Small County Outreach Program grant. Construction of the roadway and drainage project is tentatively scheduled to begin in mid-2020 with substantial completion about one year later in mid-2021. For more information, email Londonemail@example.com.
