Monroe County Updates

Monroe County declared a State of Local Emergency on Saturday due to the potential effects of Tropical Storm Elsa. The system will likely bring heightened heavy rainfall, flash flooding, storm surge, and strong winds to the Florida Keys on Monday and Tuesday.

Monroe County Emergency Management advises residents and visitors who are in campgrounds, recreational vehicles, travel trailers, live-aboard vessels, and mobile homes to either leave the Keys by sunset tonight, Monday, July 5, or prepare to shelter in place in a safe structure through the duration of the storm.

Residents should have their homes, yards, and boats secure by sunset tonight prior to sheltering in place.

Airports

Key West and Marathon airports will remain fully operational. Please check with your airline provider for any cancelations or delays at this time. 

Government Office Closures

  • Monroe County offices south of Craig Key (MM 72) will be closed to in-person services on Tuesday. County services north of Craig Key will remain open for normal business on Tuesday. Monroe County staff south of Craig Key will be working from home on Tuesday. All county offices will reopen for regular operating hours on Wednesday. 
  • 16th Judicial Circuit will be closed Tuesday.
  • First Appearance hearings for Key West, Marathon, and Plantation Key will be held tomorrow at 1 pm from the Monroe County Detention Center.
  • Monroe County Clerk of Court will be closed Tuesday.
  • Key West City Hall will be closed Tuesday.
  • Key West City parks and the Community Pool will close at noon on Monday.
  • Keys Energy Services offices will be closed on Tuesday. Crews will respond to trouble calls as conditions permit. 

There are no other known closures of city governments due to Elsa at this time, please check with the entity for details. 

Bus Services

  • Miami-Dade Transit will continue normal operations as of now, but this can change today.
  • The Lower Keys Shuttle will not run on Tuesday.
  • Key West Transit’s North and South Lines and the Duval Loop will not run on Tuesday.

Evacuation Order

  • There are no evacuation orders in place at this time.
  • No mandatory evacuation orders are expected for Elsa.  

Garbage Service

  • Stock Island and the Lower Keys to the 7 Mile Bridge: Waste Management - There will be no garbage pick-up for these areas on Tuesday. BUT- If the weather allows, Tuesday pick-up may happen after 7:30 a.m. There will be no changes to the rest of the week. Do not put trash out by the road Monday night for Tuesday pick up or on Tuesday morning before conditions improve. 
  • Marathon: Garbage Service Service- There will be no Tuesday pick-up. The Tuesday route will be run Wednesday, the Wednesday route will be on Thursday, and Thursday will stay are normal. 
  • Upper Keys: Islamorada North - Keys Sanitary and Advanced Disposal routes will run as normal with no delays. 
  • Monroe County Transfer Station in Key Largo will remain open for normal business. Transfer stations in Long Key and Cudjoe Key will be closed until at least 1 p.m. and may reopen at 1 p.m. if the 11 a.m. advisory removes the tropical storm warning.

Hospitals and Trauma Star

  • Lower Keys Medical Center: Rescheduling elective surgery cases planned for Tuesday, July 6. Keys Medical Group physician offices will be closed July 6 and patients are being rescheduled. Keys Medical Group will reopen with normal office hours on Wednesday, July 7. The hospital remains open for all other clinical services.
  • Baptist Health (Fishermen's Community Hospital and Mariner's Hospital): Hours of operation may change, but have not yet at this time. 
  • Trauma Star is in normal operations until weather conditions dictate differently.

Schools

  • Marathon South - No students or staff report Tues. 
  • North of Marathon and all District staff report to work Tues.

Monroe County School District will close all schools and offices from Marathon south to include Marathon Middle High School, Stanley Switlik School, Sugarloaf School, Gerald Adams Elementary, Key West High School, Horace O’Bryant School, Poinciana Elementary School, and the offices at those schools. District administration and all district-level services and operations will remain open. All employees are advised to keep a close eye on the weather especially in the morning and take appropriate precautions if encountering severe weather.

Shelter Locations

There are no shelters planned to open at this time.

State Parks

State parks in Monroe County are closed to camping and overnight accommodations.
