The Department of Agriculture has suspended Monroe County’s residential mulching program indefinitely due to the presence of Citrus disease.
A limited supply of free mulch is available on a limited by request basis:
(Many local tree service companies may also have mulch available.)

FREE COMPOSTING EVENTS
Monroe County and Monroe County’s yard waste contractor will offer free compost (nutrient-rich black dirt) to the residents of unincorporated Monroe County and the cities of Marathon, Key Colony Beach, Islamorada, and Layton at the County’s three transfer stations on the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until it is gone. Residents can pick up a maximum of 6 bags of compost per household. Proof of residency is required in the form of a driver’s license, utility bill, tax bill, etc.
