James Callahan has been Monroe County Fire Rescue's Fire Chief since January 2009. He also is the director of Monroe County's Emergency Services Division, which includes Fire Rescue and Emergency Management.
He began his career with Monroe County Fire Rescue (MCFR) as a battalion chief in January 2006 and served as interim fire chief for two years. Prior to Monroe County, Callahan served for 16 years as the Fire Chief of the City of St. Petersburg and Hillsborough County, both in the Tampa Bay region of Florida. He has more than 40 years of professional firefighting experience in career and combination career/volunteer fire departments, serving in the ranks of Battalion Chief, Captain, Emergency Manager, Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, Firefighter, Lieutenant, Operations Chief, Training Officer.
Chief Callahan is accredited as a Chief Fire Officer. He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer program and has a Master’s degree in Public Administration. Chief Callahan is committed to the continuous improvement of Emergency Services for the communities of the beautiful Florida Keys.
