DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE TO REGISTER FOR EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT’S SPECIAL NEEDS REGISTRY

MARATHON, FL – Monroe County Emergency Management provides assistance to eligible persons with physical or mental disabilities who may require special assistance during mandatory evacuations and emergency sheltering.

To receive this assistance, an eligible person must register IN ADVANCE with Monroe County’s Special Needs Registry. For more information about the registry and for the registry’s application, go to www.monroecountyem.com/specialneedsregistry. Don’t wait until a storm is coming to register.

Eligible conditions for the assistance include, but are not limited to: being dependent on supplemental oxygen; limited mobility; needing assistance with daily activities such as feeding, medications and hygiene; moderate dementia; cognitive impairment; immobile or wheelchair bound; in need of wound care; and/or in need of constant supervision.

The Special Needs Registry is NOT a replacement for having an evacuation plan of your own. You should try and seek help or shelter from family, friends or neighbors in a hurricane or other disaster. Public shelters should be a last resort for those who have no other choice. It is advised that you work on a plan that meets your specific medical needs with your doctor or a healthcare professional.

Applicants are required to complete and sign the Special Needs Registry Application and acknowledge that they have read the Privacy Act Information. Both are available on the Emergency Management Special Needs Registry website page. You can submit the Special Needs Registry Application by email to specialneeds@monroecounty-fl.gov; fax to 205-289-6333 or mail to: Special Needs Registry, c/o Monroe County Emergency Management, 490 63rd Street Ocean, Suite 150, Marathon, FL 33050.

All applications will be reviewed by medical staff from the Department of Health and assessed for program eligibility. Ineligible applicants will be referred to applicable sheltering options which may include a General Population Emergency Shelter or a Specialized Medical Facility or Nursing Home.

If you have registered and requested transportation assistance, you will be contacted by phone in advance of an evacuation. When we call, you will be able to decide then whether you need Emergency Management’s assistance.

Please remember that space and supplies are limited at shelters – and that very few comforts will be available, so this should be your last resort.

If you have pets that you wish to bring to the shelter you need to also fill out a Pet Sheltering form that is available on the same website page. In addition to this form you will need to send in a copy of your pet's vaccinations.
