Solid Waste Management
If you see illegal dumping in action, call 9-1-1 to report the activity while it is in progress. It is a felony to dump household appliances, construction materials, boats, trailers, RVs, and vegetative debris on County-owned vacant land and County rights-of-way and streets.
To report illegal dumping that is not actively in progress, call the most appropriate Monroe County Sheriff substation for the area.
Solid Waste, Yard Waste & Recycling Collection
If you require a bulk curbside collection, call the listed provider below for your area.
Curbside trash collection is paid as a special assessment on the property owner’s annual tax bill for Monroe County residential properties; businesses must arrange for service with local providers.
Household garbage should be placed in the county issued 96 gal trash cart for collection and disposal. No garbage should be placed on the top of the lid or on the ground. Garbage not in the cart will not be picked up. Lids should be secured if left out at night or before collection days. If animals or the weather scatter trash from your can, you are responsible for cleaning the area within 24 hours of collection times; litter causes environmental degradation and hazards to wildlife. Trash cans should be brought in from the curb after collection.
Effective October 1, 2024, weekly residential yard waste collection will be limited to “ten – 32 gallon” receptacles (cans). The receptacles can weigh no more than 50 pounds, vegetation must not extend more than 12 inches above the rim of the receptacle (can) and bundled yard waste is no longer allowed for weekly residential collection. This is supported by Monroe County Solid Waste Ordinance, Chapter 21, as amended August 21, 2024.
If you have more yard waste/vegetation than “ten – 32 gallon” receptacles can hold, here are a couple of options:
1. Additional yard waste/vegetation can be taken to the nearest transfer station, for paid disposal rate (tipping fee).
2. You may contact your local hauler, Waste Management at, 305-296-8297, Marathon Garbage Service 305-743-5165, Keys Sanitary Service, 305-451-2025, to arrange for paid collection/disposal service.
Monroe County contracts with four private franchise operators to provide solid waste, yard waste, and recycling for the Keys, excluding the City of Key West and the Village of Islamorada.

Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Collections
Monroe County hosts several household hazardous waste and e-waste collections throughout the year, as well as has hours available at the local transfer stations for collections.
Bulk Waste Pickup
Large items, including furniture, carpeting, appliances, can be removed free for residents. Four free pickups per year (up to 2.5 cubic yards per pick up) are allowed. Call the service provider in your area to schedule a pickup. Example of 2.5 cubic yards of debris is a washer & dryer combo, a couch and end table, or an oversized refrigerator.
Disposal of Tires
Used tires can be brought to any transfer station during business hours for proper disposal. There is a charge of $150.00 per ton (pro-rated based on the weight of tires disposed of).
Community Marine Cleanups
Monroe County will continue to support groups that want to do community marine cleanups of areas that big equipment could not reach following Hurricane Irma.
If you are planning a community marine cleanup in unincorporated Monroe County and need Monroe County public works’ support for pickup of the collected debris or disposal at a County transfer station, contact Monroe County Solid Waste at least a week in advance of the cleanup at 305-292-4536 to schedule.
Monroe County is proud of the community’s willingness and self-help attitude to support the Keys recovery.
