  • NEXT UPDATE: FINAL

The Monroe County Emergency Management Joint Information Center (JIC) uses information gathered from Monroe County, Florida Keys municipalities, the National Weather Service Key West, and community partners.

Monroe County Emergency Management is coordinating with the National Weather Service in Key West and its partners to advise residents on the specific impacts of the very cold weather affecting the Florida Keys on Saturday night, Jan. 31, and Sunday night, Feb. 1.

Situation Update:

  • Stay off the water and roads, especially during squally conditions
  • In response to forecasted extreme cold in the Upper Florida Keys, Monroe County Emergency Management is opening a warming center at the Plantation Key Community Center, 53 High Point Rd, Plantation Key, FL 33070, to provide warmth to those in need.
    • The center will open Saturday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. and remain open overnight until 7 a.m. The warming center will reopen on Sunday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. through 7 a.m.
    • Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures may result in hypothermia, particularly for individuals spending extended periods outdoors. Residents should remain indoors when possible, bring pets inside, and cover or relocate cold-sensitive plants. Pets should not be left outdoors during cold weather.
  • Garbage service throughout the Keys is normal
  • Secure boats and outdoor furniture for windy conditions
  • Occasional utility disruptions may occur
  • High-profile vehicles should avoid being on the road during windy conditions
  • Cold weather information

National Weather Service Key West Update

  • Prepare for the coldest temperatures thus far this winter season, including low wind chills falling to around 30 degrees in the far northern Upper Keys, this weekend.
  • Secure loose, lightweight outdoor objects around your home, office or business.   A period of strong sustained northwest winds peaking near 30 mph with frequent gusts near 45 mph is likely from late Saturday afternoon through early Sunday morning.  These winds may blow around loose, outdoor objects, down tree limbs, cause isolated utility outages, and produce hazardous crosswinds for high-profile vehicles on the more elevated, longer bridges in the Florida Keys.
  • Confidence is increasing for minor to moderate coastal flooding along the Gulf shores of the Lower Florida Keys, similar to a higher-than-average King Tide, with minor coastal flooding, similar to an average King Tide, along the Bay shores of the Middle and Upper Keys Saturday night through early Sunday morning.
  • Very hazardous marine wind and sea conditions are likely to develop on Saturday and continue through at least Monday morning.
